Plantain Podimas /Vaazhakkai Podimas is a simple and healthy recipe that is made with plantain or raw banana. It is an accompaniment for rice, sambar and rasam and are also packed with nutrients. It should be made with unripened bananas else its taste will be spoiled. We can make plain curry in so many ways. But vazhakkai podimas or Plantain podimas is different from the vazhakkai varuval/mezhukkuperatti and everyone likes it. Plantain is one of the common vegetable that is used in almost all Kerala recipes - Molagootal, mor kootan, mezhukkuperatti, aviyal, etc.,We can cook the raw banana to make Vazhakkai podimas in two ways. One is we can cut it into half and then pressure cook it in high flame for one or two whistle or we can cut it into half and boil it in water. Cut the plantain into half and pressure cook it for two whistles. It should not be mushy. We can also open cook the plantain by boiling it in water.
Now remove the skin of the plantain and grate it slowly.
Then grind the coconut, curry leaves, ginger, green chilli, coriander and keep it aside. We can also skip coriander while grinding and add it at the end.
In a kadai add coconut oil and sputter mustard seeds. Then add urad dhal and fry them till they become golden brown.
Now add the ground coconut mixture, turmeric powder, salt, saute them for less than a minute.
Finally add the grated plantain. Mix it gently so that it ll not become mushy.
Mix everything together and add 1 tsp coconut oil at the end in order to enhance the taste and the flavour.
The tasty and flavourful Plantain podimas or Vazhakkai podimas is ready to serve.
