Diwali, like many other festivals has many stories and reasons backing its celebrations. The most popular one is the return of Lord Rama with his queen Sita and brother Lakshman from their 14 year exile after vanquishing Ravana. The other reasons are to commemorate the marriage of Goddess Lakshmi with Lord Vishnu, killing of Narakasura by lord Krishna, return of the pandavas,. For Jains it is the day Lord Mahavira attained spiritual enlightment and for the Buddhists it is the day Ashoka converted to Buddhism. It is the festival of lights and hence the name Diwali. These were the info and stories told by my elders about this grand festival.<\/p>\n

For me, as soon as someone utters the word Diwali, I will start thinking about the new dresses, sweets and crackers \u00a0and the celebration starts a week before. I am sure that most of you have prepared the sweets and savouries, bought the crackers and new clothes. Yup!!! I am also getting ready for the festival. The day starts with taking oil bath, wearing new dress, bursting crackers, exchanging the sweets and savouries with our neighbours, friends and relatives and finally watching special Tv programmes with my family. It is the common practice in my home to make laddoos and mixture for the Diwali. Everyone of them(grandpa, grandma, dad, mom. my bro) will give their part for making sweet and savouries.<\/p>\n

This year, it is a thalai Diwali (first Deepavali after the wedding) for me and my husband. The tradition is the son-in-law \u00a0and his family members would visit his wife’s family during Deepavali with a handful of gifts. In return he gets gift\u00a0and he is stuffed with Bhakshanams like muruku and mixture and sweets like laddu, badhusha and other things prepard at his wife’ place. Then \u00a0he is also given “Deepavali Lehiyam” for digestion and he is supposed to return home well fed and happy. \u00a0The most important thing is giving a chance for both the families to \u00a0know each other better and celebrate the festival together with their children.<\/p>\n

Krish and I are done with the shopping. We had a lot of fun while doing so and are eagerly looking forward for the main celebration. \u00a0Hope we will have a great time this year with our family members and relatives. Here are the links for some easy sweets and savouries from my blog…<\/p>\n
