Popular during festivals like Navaratri, Vellai Kondakadalai Sundal is a nutritious snack made by cooking chickpeas and tempering them with mustard seeds, curry leaves, and grated coconut. It’s an easy and wholesome dish, often offered as neivedhyam (prasad) during pooja ceremonies. Apart from festivals, Vellai Kondakadalai Sundal is also enjoyed as a healthy, protein-packed snack or as part of a light meal.

What is Sundal?

Sundal is a traditional South Indian dish prepared with legumes. It is offered as neivedhyam or prasadh to the Almighty during pooja, especially on Navaratri days. It is very healthy, rich in protein, and can be enjoyed with coffee or tea in the evening. This dish can be made with various legumes. As it is rich in fiber, it keeps you fuller for a longer time, aiding in weight loss. You can make Kondakadalai Sundal with both black and white chickpeas, also known as Kabuli channa or garbanzo beans. Vellai Kondakadalai Sundal can be prepared in different ways.

Different Ways to Make Vellai Kondakadalai Sundal

  • Green Chilli Coconut Blend: Ground coconut, green chilli, curry leaves, and coriander are mixed with the cooked channa for a fresh and flavourful sundal.
  • Sundal Powder Mix: Mix the cooked chickpeas with ready-made Sundal powder for a quick and easy variation.
  • Red Chilli Version: In this method, use red chilli instead of green chilies. Shredded coconut is added, and the red chilies are cut into pieces before being mixed with the cooked chickpeas.

This Sundal can be made in different ways. Here i have ground coconut, green chilli, curry leaves, coriander and mixed with the cooked Channa. Second way is to mix the cooked Channa or Chickpeas with the Sundal powder. It is so easy because if you have it ready, you can just mix it with the Chickpeas. Then the third way is to use red chilli instead of green chillies. Here we will use only shredded coconut and cut the red chillies into two or three and add it with the cooked Chickpeas.
