Focaccia Bread

Focaccia is a flat oven baked Italian bread that is similar to Pizza dough in texture. It is used as a side or can be served as an appetiser or snack. This recipe is so easy to make and tastes rich and wonderful with the addition of Italian herbs and toppings. This bread is crispy outside and soft inside. I make this bread in two ways. But this is my favourite version. In the other version I make something similar to that of soft bread and bun, that is very soft. But this one is crispy and the method of making it also differ.

Equipment

Ingredients
  

Oil Mixture

  • 1/2 cup Oil
  • 5 cloves Garlic chopped/minced
  • 1 tbsp Mixed Italian herbs
  • 1/4 tsp Black pepper powder
  • 1 tsp Salt

Dough

  • 2.5 cups All purpose flour
  • 1/4 tsp Honey optional
  • 2.25 tsp Dry yeast (or) Wet yeast – 4 1/2 tsp
  • 1 cup Warm water
  • 1 tbsp Mixed Italian herbs
  • 1/2 tsp Salt
  • few Bell pepper, cherry tomatoes, olives

Instructions
 

Oil mixture

  • Take a vessel and add half a cup of oil into it. Add chopped or minced garlic, italian herbs, salt, pepper powder into it. Heat the oil to roast the garlic.
  • Once the garlic turns golden brown in colour turn off the flame and keep it aside.
  • The oil mixture is ready.
  • Note: You can roast the garlic alone in the oil. The rest of the ingredients can be mixed directly into the dough.

Dough

  • Take one cup of lukewarm water and dissolve the yeast.
  • In a bowl add all purpose flour, salt, mixed italian herbs and mix it with the hands.
  • Add the yeast mixture, half the quantity of oil mixture and knead it to a soft pliable dough.
  • Allow the dough to ferment for 20 minutes.
  • After 20 minutes, transfer the dough to a greased baking tray.
  • Gently press it with the hands and spread it evenly on the baking tray.
  • Top it with thinly sliced bell pepper, cherry tomatoes and olives.
  • Finally drizzle it with the remaining oil mixture.
  • Allow it to sit for 20 minutes before you bake it.
  • Pre-heat the oven at 180 degree celsius for 3 minutes and bake it for 20-25 minutes.
  • The tasty, crispy and soft Focaccia is ready.
  • Allow it to cool and cut it into pieces and serve.
  • I love to relish it with hot tea.
