Vinayagar Chathurthi

Vinayagar Chathurthi is celebrated to honour Lord Ganesha. He has different names like Ganesha, Pillayar, Vinayagar, Moshika vaahanar.  He is the God who removes obstacles. Whenever we start some new ventures in life, first we offer prayers to Pillayar. A coconut is broken in front of the temple. It is called s Sedhar thengai. As the coconut breaks and scatter the obstacles are also removed in our life.  In my place, they place big idols of Lord Ganesha in the temples and offer prayers.

A day before Vinayagar chathurthi my appa will buy the idol and it is my job to decorate the Pillayar. A sacred thread is also wore on the idol.  He is the God who accepts all kind of flowers and leaves. So we pluck the flowers and leaves from all the trees and plants that are there in our garden. And we also make a garland out of erukku(Madar) and Arugam pul(Bermuda grass). The next day the pooja is performed to the God followed by neiveydhyam and Deeparathanai.

Story behind Vinayagar Chathurthi

Among the different aspects of the festival, there is a saying that on the Ganesh Chaturthi day, one should not see the moon, else one will face false allegations in the coming year. There is a story behind it. Once Lord Ganesha was returning home on his Vaahana moshik. He was fed well by his devotees. The moon started to laugh on seeing huge size God on a small vehicle.

The Lord Ganesha got angry and cursed him that no light will be fallen on him again.  Later the moon repented for his mistake and asked for the pardon. Once the curse is given it cannot be taken back but can be modified. So the Lord said that the moon would gradually vanishes and after disappearing on no moon day again it will get light and becomes a full circle on Full moon day. Also the person who sees him on chathurthi day will be blamed unnecessarily.
